Over recent years I have discovered that running has grown into more than exercise for me. It has become more like meditation…more like prayer…more like a spiritual practice. It keeps me grounded and takes me beyond my anxious thoughts, it gets me out of my head and into my body to a deeper level of awareness and a connection with God and myself that exists below the surface chatter of the mind.
We often think of prayer as words, stillness, or contemplation. But movement can be prayer too, a form of embodied presence. When we run, walk, stretch, dance or breathe with intention, we’re not trying to get anywhere. We’re simply staying present to what is here. We’re listening.
This kind of movement invites us into deeper Being. It opens the doorway to the subtle sensations that connect us to the God of all things; the quiet pulse of life that runs through our cells, our breath, the earth beneath our feet, that connects us to an ever present, ever loving God.
Quieting the thinking mind, unlocking Deeper Wisdom
The analytical mind is brilliant, but it’s loud. This chatter quietens when we’re running; or walking, stretching, dancing or breathing. Space opens. In that space, we can begin to notice subtle sensations, emotional signals and intuitive impressions as the body finally gets a chance to speak.
Our nervous systems store stress, tension, and unprocessed emotion. Movement helps clear the static. When the body feels safe, deeper signals become accessible. A bit like tuning a radio until the real broadcast comes through.
We might notice fatigue, boundaries, emotions, and gut feelings. These are messages from the body saying things like:
- “This feels good.”
- “This feels wrong.”
- “I need to slow down.”
- “I’m holding tension here.”
This is the body’s wisdom giving guidance and clarity.
As humans we are made to move. When we don’t, our systems stagnate. Movement reactivates circulation, breath, lymph flow, hormonal balance, and sensory awareness. These rhythms carry information. When they flow, we feel more connected to our true, authentic self.
Running brings fresh insights and new perspectives
When I’m out running in nature I feel the invitation to stop performing, to stop controlling and to drop into something more primal and honest. My breath deepens, my senses open up and I begin to notice the world around me instead of the thoughts looping in my mind. Fresh insights often arise here because my ego has stepped aside long enough for truth from my soul to surface. My thoughts untangle, maybe anxiety softens or a heavy mood lifts. I feel more at home in myself, and in God.

Running and Spiritual Direction
Running (or any movement!), in this sense, can become a spiritual practice: a way of tuning in, paying attention to the sensations, emotions, and quiet truths that live beneath the surface of thought. A way of praying. A way remembering our belonging to God.
Spiritual direction can also support this process — helping us listen more deeply and reflect on what our body is saying, and to the wisdom that rises when we tune in to the sensations beneath the narrative in our mind.
